Multiple Panel

Process:

Beds as a precursor to the overall theme of sleep. The act of ordering the viewer to do a task.

Sleep from VegaAltair on Vimeo.

Statement:

All beings sleep. Rest for most is an afterthought, not a focal point of life, despite it being a crucial aspect. The human brain forces us to eventually stop and reset the body, the video in turn is a gentle command to help guide slumber. The audio acts as a manifestation of the human consciousness. The setting of listening to the sound via headphones, emphasizes the isolation needed for relaxation despite being in a crowd.

Something Real, Relief Print, 90"x 52"x 60" 2017

Something Real from VegaAltair on Vimeo.

The idea of translating sound and experience
into physical marks in the world.
The act of taking the surround sound
          and recreating a surrounding space.
The ephemeral nature of music
juxtaposed with the permanence of wood.
The replay of a song or album
paired with the reproducibility of a print.
Sound as substance.

Look, mixed media, 10"x9.2"x8.5", 2017

The act of deconstruction and reconstruction acts as release from the classical modes of creating work. The act of taking the non-valuable and making it into a relic by placing it above all in an untouchable, pedestal, not meant to be viewed. The juxtaposition of the idea of art being special, not to be touched, and on a pedestal; and the tactile brash valueless nature of garbage. Art as coming from nothing, yet simultaneously being greater than those viewing it.

mark making

Various Methods of creating marks. Reactions to the ephemeral nature of water and paper. The juxtaposition of longevity versus temporary, soft versus hard, burnt versus cold. Fast paced decisions creating amorphous swatches of color.

Here multiple panels are used to convey the sounds in two different contexts, giving them new meaning.

At Any Given Moment, Fall 2 with Volcanic Rock from Rebeca Méndez on Vimeo.

At Any Given Moment, Fall, 2009. Video art installation consisting of video projection, sound and lava rocks and gravel. Sound by Drew Schnurr. Image: Installation view at the Beall Center for Art and Technology, UCI, Irvine, California. Size: 159 × 120 inches ( 403.8 × 304.8 cm). Exhibition History: Beall Center for Art and Technology (Jan 8–March 14, 2009).

PETER WELZ AND WILLIAM FORSYTHE, WHENEVER ON ON ON NOHOW ON, 2005.

"The work begins with Forsythe transcribing the phrase ‘whenever on on on nohow on,” a fragment of text from Samuel Beckett, into physical movements. This gesture, and the developing dance, was filmed by cameras placed in front, to the side, and above Forsythe, as well as cameras attached to the choreographer’s body. The five views are shown simultaneously on multiple screens."
